Book Haul!

Hello fellow book-lovers!

I went a little bit "book-mad" yesterday and today. My excuse is that I have so many books on my Goodreads "to-read" list, and I have a book reading challenge on there which I aim to complete by the end of the year!

So, here is what I have purchased.
(The first two are from Sainsbury's , which by the way, do really good book deals! The following four are from Waterstones, and at the moment, they have a "buy 1 get 1 half price" deal on a lot of books!)

"The Haunting" by Alan Titchmarsh

Here is the blurb:

'How can the mysterious disappearance of Anne Flint and the drowning of a young girl in a chalk stream in 1816 possibly affect the life of schoolteacher Harry Flint some two centuries later?
With a failed marriage and no job, Harry is drawn to research his ancestors. The deeper he digs, the more he realises that the past is closer than he had ever imagined.
The Haunting is a story of love, betrayal and intrigue. Where people are not what they seem, and the past is no more predictable than the future...'

This book has been catching my attention for a while, and it sounds like a good story...we shall see!

"Eeny Meeny" by M.J. Arlidge

Here is the blurb:

'The girl emerged from the woods, barely alive. Her story was beyond belief. But it was true. Every dreadful word of it.
Days later, another desperate escapee is found - and a pattern is emerging. Pairs of victims are being abducted, imprisoned then faced with a terrible choice: kill or be killed.
Would you rather lose your life or lose your mind?
Detective Inspector Helen Grace has faced down her own demons on her rise to the top. As she leads the investigation to hunt down this unseen monster, she learns that it may be the survivors - living calling cards - who hold the key to the case.
And unless she succeeds, more innocents will die...'

I'm not a huge crime/detective/thriller book reader, not because I don't like them...because I do, I just can't read them at night-time. I'm a huge baby and I get scared VERY easily! This book, although it may be slightly scary for me, looks like a really good read. Expect a review soon!

"The Red House" by Mark Haddon

Here is the blurb:

'Angela and her brother Richard have spent twenty years avoiding each other. Now, after the death of their mother, they bring their families together for a holiday in a rented house on the Welsh border. Four adults and four children. Seven days of shared meals, log fires, card games and wet walks.
But in the quiet and stillness of the valley, ghosts begin to rise up. The parents Richard thought he had. The parents Angela thought she had. Past and present lovers. Friends, enemies, victims, saviours.
Once again Mark Haddon, bestselling author of "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time" and "A Spot of Bother", has written a novel that is funny, poignant and deeply insightful about human lives.'

Not only did the blurb intrigue me, I also bought it because I really enjoyed reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time". I really want to broaden my reading genres and try everything I can, hopefully the book is as interesting as the blurb!

"Perfect" by Rachel Joyce

Here is the blurb:

'Summer, 1972: In the claustrophobic heat, eleven-year-old Byron and his friend begin 'Operation Perfect', a hapless mission to rescue Byron's mother from impending crisis.
Winter, present day: As frost creeps across the moor, Jim cleans tables in the local café, a solitary figure struggling with OCD. His job is a relief from the rituals that govern his nights.
Little would seem to connect them but two seconds can change everything. And if your world can be shattered in an instant, can time also put it right?'

Okay, so not only does this book have such a nice cover and look to it, it also sounds like a very interesting story. I want to know how the two seconds can change everything.

"Looking for Alaska" by John Green

Here is the blurb:

' "in the dark beside me, she smelled of sweat and sunshine and vanilla, and on that thin-mooned night I could see little more than her silhouette, but even in the dark, I could see her eyes - fierce emeralds. And not just beautiful but hot too."
Alaska Young. Gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, screwed up - and utterly fascinating. Miles Halter could not be more in love with her. But when tragedy strikes, Miles discovers the value and the pain of living and loving unconditionally.
Nothing will ever be the same.'

Yes, I have the "John Green bug", but who doesn't?! I've heard a lot about this book, and I've been meaning to read it for a while...let's hope it doesn't disappoint!

"Paper Towns" by John Green

Here is the blurb:

'The thing about Margo Roth Spiegelman is that really all I could ever do was let her talk, and then when she stopped talking encourage her to go on, due to the facts that 1. I was incontestably in love with her, and 2. She was absolutely unprecedented in every way, and 3. She never really asked me any questions...
Quentin Jacobson has always loved Margo from afar. So when she climbs through his window to summon him on an all-night road trip of revenge he cannot help but follow. But the next morning, Q turns up at the school and Margo doesn't. She's left clues to her disappearance, like a trail of breadcrumbs for Q to follow.
And everything leads to one unavoidable question:

Who is the real Margo?'

"Another John Green book" you say? Yes! Again, I've been meaning to get it for ages, but now I've also heard that this is being adapted into a film. I'll probably go and see it, so I'll have to read the book first!
I want to know where Margo disappears to and who she really is, and it sounds like a sweet love story. Who doesn't love a good love story?!

So there we go! My book haul. This should keep me going for a little while! There will be reviews on all of these books at some-point in the near future, so stay tuned!
I hope you enjoyed reading this.

Amy :)
